Educational Testing Service


The Research and Development Division of Educational Testing Service a User Experience (UX) designer to join other designers and software engineers in the Research Technology Group (RTG).  The RTG supports the information technology needs --- design, development, and maintenance --- of the ETS Research division.  The group is responsible for working with Research Scientists and other staff to develop usable, visually appealing assessments as well as the tools to deliver the assessment tasks, collect data and analyze data, and report assessment results.  The successful candidate will (a) help guide the design and development of engaging, interactive, and innovative assessments, (b) collaborate on research to support national and international testing programs (e.g., NAEP, TOEFL), and (c) contribute to technologies for supporting access to assessments by students with disabilities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Translate ideas from clients into visually engaging, accessible, and highly usable designs through audience and needs analyses.
  • Create prototypes for new assessment ideas that are designed to measure specific knowledge skills but allow the test taker to easily understand what the task is and how to use any interface tools required to complete the task
  • Conduct usability studies to test and revise prototypes during the development cycle.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and designers, and outside consultants as needed, to ensure that the finished product adheres to the design vision and conforms to ETS technical and architectural standards.


A Masters degree in HCI, computer science, or a scientific or mathematical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired. Knowledge of JavaScript, CSS, and HTML5 is essential, as well as storyboarding and prototyping and the necessary tools to implement them. Familiarity with Web Accessibility standards and technologies, such as WCAG, is a strong plus.
